[IMPORTANT] THINGS to be followed while handling LEAD ACID BATTERIES

Lead Acid batteries needs preventive maintenance,
if not maintained periodically it loses it’s capacity and gradually life expectancy reduces. The cost of a Lead Acid Battery is dependent on the volume of Lead and the technology used as per application of Battery.
We had seen in our earlier Blogs about BATTERY BASICS - go ahead and check out this post. Where you know about working of Lead Acid Battery, Then we understood about Automotive /SLI Batteries, Please check this post. and then Maintains of the Automotive /SLI battery -Link is provided here.
On requests received from our readers that the information in maintenance article was more of theoretical and expecting in the preview of users , We are trying to provide information as per.
We will be understanding things which are very much
important. One should know while using LEAD ACID BATTERIES in our day to
day life.
Battery in Automotive application should be firmly
secured in the cradle provided by vehicle manufacturer, which should be of NON CONDUCTING material and cable clamps are
tightly connected to the Battery terminals. A Loosely held battery will bounces
as well as vibrates during movement of the vehicle. This will result into
damage in container and Plate.
One should always crimp the wires on thimbles and
should not be kept loose wires.
Battery
connection should be done in the appropriate polarity.
Top of Battery is kept CLEAN and DRY. Vaseline should
be applied on the terminals of Battery along with cable clamps. If moisture
is remained for longer time on the top near the terminal, it will start
corrosion on terminal along with dirt and moisture. This will result in LOSE in
POWER of BATTERY and will make your BATTERY WEAK.
Use only distilled /demineralised water for topping up
of Battery. A Battery is an electro-chemical device and any minerals added (adding tap water) will take part in chemical reaction while charging and discharging
of Battery and will damage the Battery to lose its life.
NEVER ADD ACID or any additives in Battery.
Never use OLD and NEW Batteries in series or Parallel
connection; NEITHER different capacity Batteries NOR different Brands Batteries
should be connected in same Battery Bank. This will reduce the life of smaller
/ weaker Battery.
Vehicle electrical system along with wiring should be
checked periodically along with Battery OCV (open circuit Voltage). A Faulty
electrical system of vehicle will damage the Battery.
Once in a every quarter (3 months) Vehicle Battery
should be checked, to get optimum design life of the Battery.
If a Battery is discharged, then during bench charging the
vent plugs should be kept lose to pass on the gases generated during charging.
Never keep the open flame, spark or even a lighted cigarettes near to your Battery, this will explode the Battery.
Metallic contact to terminals should be avoided as it
will result in to short circuit and spark.
Before installing the Battery on vehicle do check
electrical system of Vehicle so as it will charge the Battery properly.
These are the most important things should be followed
by the USERS of BATTERY.
Hope you like the information shared above, these are mentioned on a demand by some of our readers. Stay tuned for the next POSTS which will be more interesting..............
